How to Know When It’s Time For a New Toilet

The toilet is an indispensable fixture in your home. It’s not exaggerated. We have moved on from the days of outhouses and don’t know anyone who would choose to use them in their home. It is easy to assume that your toilet will last forever, as you depend on it multiple times per day. Toilets, like all things, have a life span. It’s very important for you and your family to be able to identify the signs that it’s time to replace your toilet. It is important to know when you should replace the fixture in order to avoid unpleasant surprises later.

You may be shocked at how frequently your toilets get used in your home. A person who stays home for a long time will use the toilet on average five times per day. Multiply this daily average per person by 365 and you get a lot of toilet usage in a single year. Although most toilets are designed to last 50 years, there is a lot of usage by families.

Toilets are under more pressure due to changing lifestyles. There is more demand for toilets in homes, with many people working remotely and children attending school online. If a family has two or more parents and three children, it is possible to replace at most one toilet in the house within the first half-century. This is not typical for “pre-COVID” usage. Toilets with a shorter lifespan may be more important for families that live in larger homes due to the increased demand for being at home.

It is easy to determine if your toilet has reached the end of its useful life. Toilets are a simple fixture. Here are some basic things you should look for.

  • Cracks in the tank
  • Toilet leaking
  • Toilet clogging is a common problem
  • Toilets need to be fixed frequently
  • Toilet installed before 1994 but is not water-efficient
